Professor Isobel Heyman

Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

Professor Isobel Heyman is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and an internationally recognised expert in child mental health. Professor Heyman has extensive experience working with some of the most unwell children and adolescents through her specialist clinics in Cambridge and London. She founded the UK’s first national and specialist clinic for young people with obsessive-compulsive disorder before setting up the Psychological Medicine Team at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Professor Heyman has extensive expertise in developmental neuropsychiatry, Tourette syndrome, epilepsy, persistent physical symptoms, and the complex interface between physical and mental health.

Her clinical career has included senior roles at some of the UK’s leading institutions, including Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, the Institute of Child Health at University College London, the Institute of Psychiatry, and the Maudsley Hospital. Her work spans clinical practice, research, teaching, leadership, and national strategic advice, all of which are recognised both nationally and internationally.

Professor Heyman is highly active in research, with over 300 publications and more than 10,000 citations. Her most recent research has focused on improving the detection and treatment of mental ill-health in children with long-term physical conditions. She is also committed to public engagement and has contributed widely to national and international media on child and adolescent mental health.

Her contributions have been recognised with numerous prestigious awards, including the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Psychiatrist of the Year (2015), CAMHS Team of the Year (2018) for her work at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and the British Medical Journal Mental Health Team of the Year award (2021) for developing the innovative ‘Lucy Booth’ drop-in mental health service. In 2023, she was awarded an MBE for services to Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
